The Impact Player rule has changed the dynamics of the game in IPL. Created to make the game more entertaining for the spectators, the rule has become threatening for some players. Axar Patel, a prominent Indian cricketer, talked about how he feels the Impact Player jeopardises the role of an allrounder in the league.
Axar Patel feels threatened by the Impact Player rule
After the match between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans, Patel shed light on how he perceives the Impact Player rule. “As an allrounder, I feel that an allrounder’s role is in danger with the Impact Player rule. Every team is looking to play either a pure batter or a pure bowler as their impact player, and the allrounders are not being used.”
He added, “with the Impact Player, every team goes into the match thinking they have six batters or bowlers, depending on if they are batting or bowling. This also creates a lot of confusion,” when talking with ‘Jio Cinema.’
This is not the first time that the rule has been scrutinized. Earlier, Indian captain Rohit Sharma also discussed the rule’s disparity. Several cricketing pundits backed his opinion.
Axar, who is himself an all-rounder in the real sense, feels threatened by the rule, which can sometimes undervalue the importance of an all-rounder in the game.
Usually known for his economical bowling prowess, Axar performed well with the bat in hand against Gujarat Titans. He was promoted up the order to battle the GT attack and produced a gem of an inning by scoring 66 runs off 43 balls.
He even teamed up with his captain, Rishabh Pant, to add 113 runs for the fourth wicket. Together, they ensured that DC posted a hefty total of 224 on the board. Later, they went on to win the game by a margin of 4 runs.
