The BCCI has been inundated with applications for the role of Team India’s head coach, receiving over 3000 submissions by the deadline of May 27. This high volume of applications includes numerous fake entries using names of prominent personalities like Sachin Tendulkar, Narendra Modi, Virender Sehwag, and Harbhajan Singh. According to a report by the Indian Express, the board is struggling to sift through the applications to identify genuine contenders.
This is not the first time the BCCI has faced such a situation. Three years ago, during the search for Ravi Shastri’s successor, the board received over 5000 applications, most of which were also fake.
Back then, the BCCI had a clear frontrunner in Rahul Dravid, who transitioned smoothly into the role after leading India A and the Under-19 teams to significant success.
With Rahul Dravid’s tenure set to conclude after the T20 World Cup, the BCCI is again searching for a new head coach. This time, the application process, conducted via Google Forms, was intended to streamline the scrutiny process. However, the abundance of unserious applications has complicated matters.
A BCCI source explained to the Indian Express, “Last year too, the BCCI received such a response where imposters applied, and the story is similar this time. The reason the BCCI had to invite applications on Google forms is it’s easy to scrutinize the names of applicants in one sheet.”
Potential Candidates
Despite the influx of fake applications, reports suggest that Gautam Gambhir is the leading candidate for the head coach position after successfully leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title. VVS Laxman, who was previously considered, is reportedly not interested due to his commitments with the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Additionally, Stephen Fleming has withdrawn his candidacy due to the demanding nature of the role, and the Australian duo of Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting are not in contention.
The new head coach will have a crucial role starting with India’s limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in July, followed by several high-profile tournaments. The BCCI’s decision will be pivotal in shaping the team’s strategy and performance in the upcoming months.
The BCCI is now faced with the task of carefully scrutinizing the applications to find a suitable candidate who can lead the team effectively. The next head coach will need to bring tactical acumen and the ability to manage and inspire a team of high-profile players.
