Joe Root, England’s star batter, has faced a challenging time with the bat in the ongoing Test series against India, amassing only 77 runs in six innings across the first three Tests, averaging a modest 12.83. The pressure on Root has intensified as England currently trails 2-1 in the series with two matches remaining.
Root, the leading run-scorer during England’s Test series in India in 2021, has attracted criticism for his shot selection, with some pundits questioning the wisdom of certain strokes leading to his dismissals. Despite the scrutiny, England’s captain, Ben Stokes, has come to Root’s defence, highlighting the veteran’s outstanding track record in Test cricket.
‘Who am I to question guy who has 30 Test match hundreds?’ – Ben Stokes comes in defence of Joe Root
In a recent statement, Stokes emphasized Root’s cricketing prowess: “Joe Root’s scored nearly 12,000 runs. I think we can leave the decision-making and ‘why’ with Joe. I can understand why there would be frustration around that because of how good a player Joe is.”
Root’s unconventional dismissal in the first innings of the third Test in Rajkot, attempting a reverse scoop off Jasprit Bumrah, drew particular attention. While critics questioned the shot choice, Stokes backed Root’s decision, pointing out that Bumrah had troubled Root early in the series and the attempt aimed to disrupt the bowler’s rhythm.
“Jasprit Bumrah has got him out a couple of times this tour early on. And I thought Joe was looking really, really good at the crease, and he sensed that as a time to put something different back onto Jasprit and make him maybe think about something,” Stokes explained.
Stokes highlighted the strategic aspect of Root’s shot, noting its potential to alter field placements and force bowlers to reassess their approach. Despite the dismissal, Stokes refrained from questioning a player of Root’s stature, with nearly 12,000 Test runs and 30 Test hundreds.
The fourth Test is scheduled at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, beginning on Friday, February 23. As England aims for a comeback, Root’s form and decision-making will likely continue to be under scrutiny. Still, with the captain’s backing from Stokes, the focus remains on the team’s collective efforts to level the series.
