In a significant move, former New Zealand batter Craig McMillan was named the assistant coach of the New Zealand Women’s cricket team. McMillan brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as the batting coach for the New Zealand men’s team from 2014 to 2019, during which the Kiwis reached two consecutive ODI World Cup finals.
Coaching Experience and Achievements
McMillan’s coaching credentials are robust. During his tenure with the New Zealand men’s team, he developed a strong batting lineup that competed fiercely on the global stage. His latest coaching role was with Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2018, where he served as the fielding coach. McMillan’s decade-long international playing career from 1997 to 2007, during which he played 260 international games for New Zealand, adds further depth to his coaching expertise.
“I’m rapt with the appointment and to be back involved in coaching international cricket again. It’ll be great to be part of the White Ferns family as we head into a busy nine-month schedule with exciting challenges. I’ve watched these talented players a lot from close quarters over the past few seasons. I can’t wait to join the management team in driving the group forward,” McMillan expressed his enthusiasm, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Collaboration with Head Coach Ben Sawyer
McMillan will work alongside Head Coach Ben Sawyer as the New Zealand Women’s team, also known as the White Ferns, embarks on a challenging tour of England later this month. Sawyer highlighted McMillan’s proven track record and the excitement within the team regarding his appointment.
“He’s a proven coach with an extensive international playing career. The players are excited to start working with Craig; they’re looking forward to having him on board for the upcoming tour to England,” Sawyer said.
The New Zealand Women’s team is gearing up for a busy schedule. From June 26 to July 17, they will tour England, playing three ODIs and five T20Is. In September, they will travel to Australia for a three-match T20I series, culminating in the T20 World Cup in October.
One of the key players returning to the squad is Lauren Down. After taking a sabbatical from cricket to become a mother, Down’s return is highly anticipated, as she brings both experience and stability to the team.
