David Warner, one of the most iconic Australian openers, saw his white-ball career come to an unprecedented end as his team was knocked out of the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
His final inning came against India at St Lucia when Australia suffered their second loss of the stage. And somewhat everyone knew his walk off the field at St Lucia was his final one in the Australia shirt.
DAVID WARNER RETIRED FROM INTERNATIONAL CRICKET…!!!!
Warner’s final inning was rather anticlimactic. He had just made six runs from same number of deliveries before departing by edging Arshdeep Singh’s ball to the slip.
Australia put on a fight, with Travis Head once again putting on a show with his inning of 76 from 43 balls. However, there was not enough support from the other end for him to keep going. Marsh, Maxwell, and David had started. But none of them could convert them into a match-winning or supporting knock for Head.
As a result, Australia suffered a defeat by the margin of 24 runs.
Later, Josh Hazlewood confirmed Warner’s departure by saying, “Nothing has been said yet… it might be said after this (press conference) before the evening game, but I think we’ll wait until after the game, and then we’ll acknowledge the career that’s been.”

Further discussing Warner’s absence from the team, Hazlewood said, “Life without him, we have sort of gotten used to it a little bit in New Zealand.” He admitted that it is not easy to move, having played with someone for so long. But then, one has to move on in life and keep pushing.
There are still some shadow of doubts around Warner’s retirement, as official confirmation by the player is awaited. But it is likely that the player has appeared in his last white-ball game for Australia.
