Shafali Verma has been enduring a mixbag of a WPL. She has been among the runs but has not been able to make it big in the tournament. However, she came to her team’s rescue when they needed it the most and delivered a great inning to help her team reach the final.
In their first playoff game, Delhi Capitals fared off against Gujarat Giants. They were handy with the ball and restricted their opponents to a score of just 126 runs. Hence, Varma took the crease with a target of 127, separating them from the final spot.
Shafali’s blazing inning put DC in second consecutive final of WPL
She was in phenomenal ball-hitting form, racking up 71 runs from just 37 balls to almost single-handedly tilt the match in her team’s favour. In her inning, Verma smashed 7 fours and 5 sixes.
She opened the inning with Meg Lanning, and together they posted 31 in just 3 overs before Mooney ran out her compatriot. Four balls later, Alice Capsey departed with a nought to her name, and DC were reduced to 31 for 2.
That is when Verma and Rodrigues came together to strike a partnership worth 94 runs on the board. Rodrigues held on to one end while Verma did her business, destroying the Gujarat attack. However, she failed to take her team over the line. Tanuja Kanwar claimed her scalp, although it was too late for GG to salvage anything.
Jemimah Rodrigues finished the job for her team with a flouring boundary through the offside. With this strike, she booked a final berth for her team for the second time in a row.
They will face the winner of the MI vs. RCB game, which will be held on March 15th at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
