As the Chennai Super Kings prepared for their match against the Lucknow Super Giants, Dwayne Bravo, the team’s bowling coach, emphasised the significance of yorkers and the team’s commitment to becoming the most astute bowling unit in the tournament. In a video shared on the IPL’s X handle, Bravo discussed the crucial role of the yorker as a key weapon for pacers and the need to trust this delivery.
Emphasising the Yorker’s Role
Bravo highlighted the importance of mastering the yorker for sustained success in T20 cricket, citing top bowlers such as Lasith Malinga, Jasprit Bumrah, Matheesha Pathirana, and himself as examples of players who have relied on the delivery to achieve great success.
“You cannot last long without a yorker. If you look at players who have had the most success in T20 cricket, Lasith Malinga, Bumrah, Pathirana, or myself, we all have the same plan: trying to bowl as many yorkers as possible, along with our variations,” Bravo said.
Bravo noted that one of the primary reasons bowlers struggle in T20 cricket is their lack of confidence in executing yorkers. To address this, he emphasised the need for bowlers to practise delivering yorkers consistently in training sessions.
“One of the main reasons bowlers struggle in this format is because they don’t trust their ability to bowl yorkers. So, I implement sessions where each bowler has to bowl 12-14 yorkers per session,” he said.
Bravo praised young fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana for his unique slingy action, likening him to Lasith Malinga. Pathirana took 19 wickets in 12 matches for CSK last season and has nine wickets in four games in IPL 2024.
“Pathirana is very special. I call him Baby Malinga. He has natural ability and skill, so you don’t try to over-coach him. You just empower him with knowledge and information while keeping it simple,” Bravo said.
Bravo also mentioned Bangladesh veteran Mustafizur Rahman, who has 11 wickets in six games this season, and Tushar Deshpande, who made a name for himself with 21 wickets in 16 games last season.
