Gautam Gambhir, the former India opener, was recently interviewed by the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) after being the sole candidate to apply for the head coach position of the Indian men’s cricket team. With Rahul Dravid’s contract expiring after the ongoing T20 World Cup, Gambhir is the main candidate.

During his interview with the CAC, Gambhir reportedly laid down five conditions for accepting the role, as detailed by Navbharat Times.

Firstly, Gambhir demanded complete control over the team’s cricketing operations, insisting on no interference from the board. He emphasized the importance of autonomy in implementing his vision and strategies effectively.

Secondly, Gambhir wants to select his support staff, including batting, fielding, and bowling coaches. This condition underscores his desire for a cohesive and unified coaching team that aligns with his philosophy and approach to the game.

The third and most significant condition revolves around the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Gambhir suggested that this tournament could be the last chance for four senior players—Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammad Shami—to prove their worth. If these players fail to secure a victory for India, they will be dropped from the team. However, there was no mention of these players being excluded from all game formats, leaving some uncertainty about their future in Test cricket and other formats.

The fourth condition proposes creating a separate team for Test cricket. This move could bring specialized focus and strategy to the game’s longest format, ensuring that the team is well-prepared and capable of competing at the highest level.

Lastly, Gambhir intends to prepare a roadmap for the 2027 ODI World Cup. This long-term planning would involve identifying and nurturing talent, developing strategies, and ensuring the team is in peak condition for the tournament.
