The IPL 2024 clash between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) showcased thrilling on-field action and raised concerns about Hardik Pandya ‘s performance as the captain of MI. Despite MI’s loss against CSK, Pandya’s struggles as a captain, batsman, and bowler were scrutinised by experts and fans.
MI skipper Hardik Pandya acknowledged MS Dhoni’s pivotal role in guiding CSK to victory. Pandya admitted that CSK’s astute planning, backed by Dhoni’s on-field leadership, made a significant difference in the match. He emphasized the importance of adapting to different situations, suggesting that MI could have employed different strategies during their chase.
“It (target) was definitely gettable, but they bowled pretty well. Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with their plans and their approach. They got the hang of it, there’s a man behind the stumps (Dhoni) who tells them what’s working, and that helps. It (pitch) was holding up a bit and getting difficult.”
“It was about batting well and keeping the intent. We were going quite well (in the run chase) till Pathirana came into the attack and took those two wickets. It was about what is best at that time, we could have done something different. I like to play percentage cricket, it would have been difficult for him (Dube) against seamers rather than spin. We are on the road for the next four games, need to play good cricket, need to keep the intensity high,” Hardik said following the match’s conclusion.
Kevin Pietersen " Hardik Pandya is smiling too much when he does the toss, tries to act like he is so happy but he is not.The boo that he is getting is hurting him,he is an Indian player & doesn't want to be treated like this, this is affecting his Cricket"pic.twitter.com/j37Zool42M

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen joined the critique, highlighting lapses in Pandya’s captaincy decisions and execution on the field. Pietersen criticized Pandya’s reluctance to switch to Plan B, especially when MI’s seam bowlers conceded runs. He suggested that Pandya should have introduced spinners earlier to change the game’s pace and stem the flow of runs.
Pietersen also expressed concern about how Pandya’s off-field issues affect his on-field performance. The crowd’s reaction to Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as MI’s captain impacted him deeply. Pietersen observed a change in Pandya’s demeanour, noting excessive smiling during the toss, which he interpreted as a facade to hide inner turmoil.
According to Pietersen, Pandya’s emotional response to criticism and crowd reactions indicates the toll it has taken on him mentally and emotionally. He urged for swift resolution of the off-field issues, emphasizing the detrimental effect it could have on Pandya’s cricketing career and mental well-being.

The criticisms directed towards Pandya highlight leadership challenges in high-pressure environments like the IPL. As captain, Pandya faces immense scrutiny not only for his on-field performance but also for his decision-making abilities and ability to inspire his team.
It is evident that Pandya’s struggles extend beyond his individual performance with bat and ball. As MI’s captain, he must navigate through the complexities of leadership while also dealing with external pressures and expectations.
As the IPL season progresses, Pandya and MI will need to address these concerns and find ways to improve their performance while maintaining harmony off the field. Resolving off-field issues and Pandya’s ability to adapt and grow as a leader will be crucial in determining MI’s success in the remainder of the tournament.
