Curtly Ambrose, one of the most celebrated fast bowlers of all time, recently expressed his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah, emphasizing that his unorthodox action should not be changed despite his past struggles with stress fractures. Ambrose believes that every fast bowler faces the inherent risk of injury, and Bumrah is no exception.
Ambrose, a huge fan of Bumrah, appreciates his unconventional yet highly effective bowling style. “From the first time I saw him, I was impressed. He’s so different from traditional fast bowlers but highly effective, and that’s what I like about him,” Ambrose said in a telephonic interview with PTI. He recalled meeting Bumrah a couple of years ago when India played in Antigua, noting how enjoyable it is to watch him perform.
Curtly Ambrose “I’m a big fan of Jasprit Bumrah.Right from ever since I saw him. He’s so unconventional but highly effective. And that’s what I like about him. When you look at traditional fast bowlers, you wouldn’t look at Bumrah,he’s so unorthodox.”pic.twitter.com/rDo9KhFP7Y
Bumrah, regarded as one of the best all-format pacers in the game, has had his fair share of back problems, even undergoing surgery in March of last year. After a lengthy rehabilitation, he made a strong comeback ahead of the ODI World Cup in India in November and has been in excellent form since then. The 30-year-old has the ability to take wickets at any stage of a T20 match and is equally effective in Tests, particularly with the reversing ball.
Don’t want a thing to be changed in his unorthodox action
Ambrose believes that Bumrah should only consider changing his action if he sustains a serious injury. “Every fast bowler faces the risk of injury. But you can’t play thinking about that risk. You have to go out and perform to the best of your ability. The only reason to change his action will be if he sustains a serious injury that requires a remodel,” Ambrose explained.
Ambrose, who took 405 wickets in 98 Tests for the West Indies, also dismissed that Bumrah’s stress fractures are solely due to his action. “There are many factors that contribute to injuries. Even bowlers with perfect actions, like Ian Bishop, have suffered stress fractures,” he pointed out.
On the ongoing T20 World Cup, Ambrose expressed his satisfaction with the performances of smaller teams like the USA and Afghanistan, which have managed to upset the big teams. “I predicted some upsets before the start of the World Cup, and so far, we’ve seen a few. It makes the tournament more interesting,” he concluded.
Moreover, after a fairytale run in the group stage, India is gearing up to face Afghanistan in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Bridgetown, Barbados, today, June 20.
