The 2024 T20 World Cup is right around the corner, and ICC has announced yet another ambassador for the tournament. This time, they have decided to select Pakistan’s iconic all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, as their latest ambassador.
Afridi is a veteran of the game in the real sense. He has featured in six T20 World Cups, two of which he played as captain. Afridi was even the captain of the 2009 Pakistan team that won the tournament. He was awarded the Man of the Match award for his performance in that particular game at Lord’s.
Talking ahead of the tournament Shahid Afridi said, “he ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is an event that is very close to my heart. From being Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my favourite career highlights have come from competing on this stage.”
He also expressed his anticipation for the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan match, scheduled for 9 June. This clash of titans, one of the most intense rivalries in sports, is expected to draw a massive crowd despite being held in New York.
ICC’s general manager of marketing and communications, Claire Furlong, added, “Shahid competed in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, two of which as captain and delivering a Player of the Match performance when winning the trophy in 2009, so who better to join our all-star Ambassador team.”
They further said that Afridi, along with Indian legend Yuvraj Singh, is renowned and a fan favorite worldwide. They will be joined on the list of ambassadors by Chris Gayle and eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bol.
The tournament will begin on June 1st. The historic first match, between Sri Lanka and South Africa, will take place on June 3rd at the Nassau Cricket Stadium in the USA.
