India recently announced their squad for the T20 World Cup that will later take place this year in the West Indies and USA. Commenting on the squad, Windies Legend Courtney Walsh said that he’s not surprised to see the Indian team lineup with four spinners. In fact, he called it a strategic move. Something that will align with their strength.
In a conversation with PTI, Walsh was quoted, “India picking four spinners I’m not surprised… it seems to be their strength.” He further added, “West Indies have picked three spinners. It’s going to be different conditions and everybody has to balance the team.”
The Indian squad boasts a formidable spin attack with a mix of seasoned and versatile spinners. The wrist spinners, Chahal and Kuldeep, bring their unique skills to the table. To complement them, the squad includes two finger spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. These two not only excel with the ball but can also significantly contribute with the bat, adding depth to the team’s batting lineup.
During the squad announcement, Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, told the media about his preference for four spinners. Although he didn’t disclose the real reason behind the same, it is understood that the decision was made keeping the slow nature of pitches in mind.
Walsh also believes the same. According to him, the slowness of the wickets in the host nation will favour teams with spinners. Furthermore, he acknowledged that the Indian team’s pace attack was potent.
Walsh still believes that batters will dominate the tournament. And even when it’s hard to predict who will emerge as the champion, he believes Windies will emerge victorious again.
The West Indies bowler is a legend of the game. He played for nearly 17 years, from 1984 to 2001. And his bowling insight has always been spot on. Hence, when he gives his verdict on the conditions, they are considered important by the cricket fraternity.
In his career, Walsh played 132 test matches and claimed 519 wickets. He formed a formidable bowling partnership with Curtley Ambrose that rattled the stumps and the batters alike with their fierce pace.
