Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has responded to India skipper Rohit Sharma’s comments regarding reverse swing, igniting a fresh debate in the cricketing world. The controversy began when Inzamam questioned how India, particularly left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, managed to reverse-swing the ball during the 16th over of Australia’s innings in their ‘Super 8’ match of the T20 World Cup.
Rohit’s Initial Comments
When asked about Inzamam’s allegations, Rohit Sharma dismissed the claims, explaining that reverse swing is a natural occurrence in hot and dry conditions. He stated, “What should I say now about this? You are playing in such hot sun, the wicket is so dry, the ball reverses automatically. It’s happening for all the teams, not only ours. All the teams are reverse-swinging. Sometimes, it’s important to open your mind. It’s important to understand what conditions you’re playing in. The match is not taking place in England or Australia.”
In response to Rohit’s remarks, Inzamam-ul-Haq emphasized Pakistan’s historical expertise in reverse swing, cautioning Rohit not to teach the originators of the art. Speaking on a Pakistan news channel, Inzamam said, “Dimag to hum zarur apna khole lenge. First thing is that he (Rohit) has admitted that it’s happening. So it means what we observed is correct. Second thing, Rohit Sharma ko humein batane ki zarurat nahi padni chahiye ke reverse swing kis tarah hota hai, kitni dhoop mei hota hai, kis pitch pe hota hai. Jo sikhane wale hain unko nahi yeh cheez sikhaya karte (there is no need for Rohit to tell us how reverse swing happens, under how much sun, on what pitch; you don’t teach something to someone who actually taught it to the world).”
Clarification and Suggestion to Umpires
Inzamam clarified that his comments were not an accusation of ball tampering but a suggestion for umpires to be vigilant. “The reporter asked the wrong question. I gave a suggestion to the umpires, to keep their eyes open because the ball is reverse-swinging in the 15th over. Still my advice to the umpires is the same, keep your eyes open as well as your mind. He (Rohit) just talked about mind, I am saying keep both eyes and mind open.”
Inzamam Ul Haq warns Rohit Sharma:
“Rohit Sharma ko humein batane ki zaroorat nahi hay ke reverse swing kis tarah hoti hay. Dunya ko reverse swing sikhane walon ko nahin sikhaya jata” 🇵🇰🇮🇳🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/rJXcLCOpVs
Despite the controversy, India has advanced to the T20 World Cup final after defeating England by 68 runs in the second semifinal. They will face South Africa, who defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets, marking their first entry into a World Cup final.
This exchange between Inzamam-ul-Haq and Rohit Sharma highlights the ongoing debate and intrigue surrounding the technique of reverse swing in cricket, a skill that has been a significant part of the game’s history and evolution.
