KKR has done it. They defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of IPL 2024 to clinch their third IPL title.
It was perhaps one of the most one-sided affairs in the history of IPL finals. KKR came into the game as favourites and performed similarly to trounce the Sunrisers by a margin of 8 wickets.
Having lost the toss, they were asked to bowl first, and their bowlers made the most of the conditions on offer. The ball was swinging around, and Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora made the most of it by dismissing Head and Abhishek early.
There was little fightback by the middle order as Markram, Nitish Reddy, and Klaasen reached double figures by scoring 20, 13, and 16, respectively. Towards the cue end of the inning, Pat Cummins scored 24 to help his team reach 113 before they were bundled in the 19th over.
Andre Russell was the standout performer in the middle over for KKR. His exceptional bowling skills were on full display as he clinched 3 wickets in his 2.3 overs, removing the likes of Markram, Klaasen, and later Cummins, thereby significantly curtailing SRH’s inning.
With this score, SRH also registered the lowest total in the history of IPL finals. They were a complete mess with the bat in hand, as none of their batters could get a move on.
The second inning was no different for them. Despite dismissing Narine early for just 6 runs, they couldn’t stop the free-flowing batting of Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer. They scored 39 and 52* respectively to ensure that Kolkata didn’t slip up. Iyer also scored the winning runs for his team and took them over the line with 9.3 over to spare.
Not only did KKR secure their third IPL title, but the game also etched its name in history as the shortest ever non-interrupted IPL playoff/knockout game, lasting just 29 overs. This record-breaking feat surpassed the previous shortest game of 32 overs, set way back in 2010, when RCB and Deccan Chargers met for the 3rd place game.
