Gautam Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles in 2012 and 2014, has acknowledged his aggressive approach as a player and leader while also candidly admitting to some actions he took during his career.
Leading by Example
In a recent interview with Sportskeeda, Gambhir discussed his role as KKR’s mentor in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. The team is at the top of the league table with 16 points from 8 wins in 11 matches. The former KKR captain’s aggressive intent, evident during his playing days, is still reflected in the team’s current performances.
“Sometimes you need to have an aggressive approach as a leader if you want your team to be aggressive,” Gambhir stated. “Sometimes you need to do things you didn’t want to. When I look back at my career, I have done some things I shouldn’t have done. But I believed if I didn’t get aggressive and didn’t lead by example, my team wouldn’t play aggressively.”
Gambhir emphasised the importance of allowing players and leaders to express themselves on the field and argued that they should not be judged solely based on their on-field conduct. “I feel every player and every leader has the right to express themselves on the field,” he said. “A player should not be judged just by how he is on the field, but how he is off it should also be looked at.”
Gambhir’s transition to the role of mentor for KKR has proven successful, as the team is well on its way to a possible third title. Prior to this, he served as the mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in the 2023 season. His expertise and leadership have clearly had a significant impact on KKR’s performance in IPL 2024.
The former Indian opener’s candid remarks provide insight into the challenges and responsibilities of leadership in cricket and the need to balance aggression and integrity on the field.
