Amid swirling speculations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially stated that the Indian Premier League (IPL) will remain within India’s borders. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah firmly dismissed any notions of relocating the tournament overseas, quelling rumours of a potential shift to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Confirmation from BCCI Secretary
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Jay Shah stated, “No, it won’t be moved overseas.” Shah’s clarification comes in response to reports suggesting IPL teams had requested a relocation due to the upcoming General Elections in India. These reports also hinted at BCCI members exploring the possibility of holding the second half of the IPL in the UAE.
Shah’s definitive statement has put to rest all speculations regarding the IPL’s relocation. Despite initial discussions and rumours, the BCCI has affirmed its commitment to hosting the entire league within the country.
The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the general elections, scheduled to occur in seven phases from April 19 to June 4. With the polling dates confirmed, the BCCI is expected to release the full IPL schedule soon. Only the dates for the first 21 games, from March 22 to April 7, have been disclosed. The IPL will commence with a match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In other IPL-related news, Shreyas Iyer departed for Kolkata on Saturday to join his teammates at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Despite concerns about his fitness, Iyer’s scans have shown no significant issues, clearing him from the beginning to participate in the IPL. KKR officials anticipate his involvement in their opening fixture against SunRisers Hyderabad at Eden Gardens on March 23.
