The IPL 2024 season commenced its round-robin stage on March 22 with a clash between the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. As customary, the group-stage matches are scheduled daily and feature a mix of single and doubleheaders.
However, the upcoming match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rajasthan Royals, slated for April 17 at the Eden Gardens, faces potential rescheduling or relocation due to the coinciding Ram Navami festivities. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has proposed this possibility to both franchises, the state association, and broadcasters.
Ram Navami, a significant Hindu festival commemorating Lord Rama’s birth, garners widespread nationwide celebrations. Concerns arise over security arrangements for the IPL game amidst the fervent religious processions and parades, which often disrupt traffic flow in Kolkata.
Complicating matters, the nation is concurrently engaged in a general election. Acknowledging these factors, the BCCI is in discussions with the Kolkata police while ongoing talks with franchises and broadcasters explore potential schedule adjustments.
The BCCI has bifurcated the IPL schedule into two phases, initially releasing fixtures for the first 21 games and later announcing dates for the remaining 53 matches after the general election dates were confirmed.
“We are in discussions with the police authorities and will make a decision soon,” stated a top IPL official involved in the deliberations.
Interestingly, with 13 matches completed, only two franchises remain unbeaten in IPL 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have each secured victories in their first two matches. RR is scheduled to play their first away game of the season against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 17. Whether they can uphold their winning streak against a formidable Mumbai side remains to be seen, especially amidst the prospect of schedule adjustments for the KKR-RR fixture at Eden Gardens.
