Michael Vaughan has tipped Abhishek Sharma to emulate Yashasvi Jaiswal by breaking into India’s squads across all three formats. Following a stellar run in IPL 2024, Abhishek has emerged as a standout performer for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), showcasing his batting prowess at the top of the order. His impressive 66 off 28 balls against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 19 secured SRH the second spot in the league.
Technically Sound with a Flair of Legends
After SRH’s win, Vaughan spoke to Cricbuzz, highlighting Abhishek’s potential to follow in the footsteps of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who quickly rose through the ranks to become a key player for India. Vaughan praised Abhishek’s technical abilities, likening his bat swing to that of cricket legends Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh.
“If you go back to the story of Yashasvi Jaiswal, he jumped the rails quickly through the IPL and the Indian side. Been a revelation in Test match cricket. Probably early to say this, but Abhishek could do exactly the same,” Vaughan remarked.
“He could easily do the same across all three formats. His technical side is excellent. He has got Brian Lara-esque and Yuvraj Singh-type swing of the willow,” he added.
Abhishek’s extraordinary performance this season included breaking Virat Kohli’s record for the most sixes by an Indian batter in an IPL season, with 41 sixes to his name. Vaughan was particularly impressed by this achievement, considering the high calibre of Indian batters in the league.
“When you think about how much talent there is and how many great Indian batters are in the IPL, and he is top of the tree. Fantastic,” Vaughan said.
In 13 matches, Abhishek has amassed 467 runs at an average of 38.92 and an extraordinary strike rate of 209.41. His explosive batting has been a crucial asset for SRH, making him one of the season’s top performers. Abhishek’s next appearance will be in Qualifier 1 when SRH faces Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Vaughan compared Abhishek to Yashasvi, pointing out the latter’s remarkable rapid ascent through the IPL and into the Indian team. Jaiswal’s seamless transition into Test cricket has been a testament to his talent, and Vaughan believes Abhishek has the potential to achieve similar success.
“Yashasvi has been a wonderful story, you don’t see many like that. Just arrive on the international stage and look like they have been playing for 15 years. But I think Abhishek isn’t far off,” Vaughan commented.
As Abhishek continues to impress with his performances, his potential inclusion in India’s national team for all formats seems increasingly likely. With a strong technical foundation and a batting style reminiscent of some of cricket’s greats, Abhishek Sharma is poised to significantly impact the international stage.
