Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh recently shared his views on the composition of the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in an interview with the International Cricket Council (ICC). One of the key points he addressed was the inclusion of veteran wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik in the squad.
Yuvraj Singh emphasized that if Dinesh Karthik is not going to be a regular feature in the playing XI, there is little justification for his inclusion in the 15-man squad. Despite Karthik’s recent impressive performances, including a blazing knock of 83 runs off just 34 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Yuvraj believes that the Indian selection committee should prioritize in-form keepers like Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant.
Drawing from past experiences, Yuvraj highlighted that during the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022, Karthik did not receive many opportunities to showcase his skills on the field. Therefore, Yuvraj questioned the rationale behind selecting Karthik if he is unlikely to feature prominently in the playing XI.
Yuvraj Singh Chooses Pant, Samson over Experienced DK
Yuvraj advocated for including younger talents like Pant and Samson, who have been in exceptional form and have the potential to make a significant impact in the tournament. He emphasized the importance of having players who can consistently contribute to the team’s success, particularly in high-pressure situations characteristic of global events like the T20 World Cup.
While acknowledging Karthik’s prowess with the bat, Yuvraj reiterated that if the veteran cricketer is not a regular starter, it would be more prudent to invest in younger talent who can bring energy and dynamism to the squad.
“DK has been batting well, but the thing with DK is the last time (2022) they picked him and the T20 WC was on he didn’t get to play. If DK is not in your XI I don’t think there is any point in picking him. There is Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson and both guys are in great form and obviously they are younger.”
“I would like to see DK in the mix, but if he is not going to play then you would rather have someone who is younger and can make the difference,” Yuvraj Singh told the ICC.
Yuvraj Singh’s stance on Dinesh Karthik’s inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad underscores the importance of strategic squad selection based on players’ potential contributions. His insights shed light on the intricate decision-making process faced by the Indian selection committee as they strive to assemble a formidable squad capable of competing at the highest level in the upcoming tournament.
