As part of their ongoing Go Green Initiative, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have successfully restored two major lakes in Bengaluru, significantly enhancing the water-holding capacity of these water bodies and contributing to civic amenities at a third lake. The restoration project, completed in collaboration with India Cares Foundation, demonstrates RCB’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.
Lake Restoration Efforts
RCB launched the Lake Improvement Works Project in October 2023, focusing on restoring Ittgalpura Lake and Sadenahalli Lake, both located in highly water-stressed areas reliant on groundwater and surface water. Through desilting and development work, over 1.20 lakh tons of silt and sand were removed from the lakes, creating pathways and stabilising the lakes’ ecosystems.
The restoration efforts significantly increased the lakes’ water-holding capacities, covering up to 17 acres. Nine acres of lake land were recovered, and features like stabilisation ponds and wetlands were introduced to enhance the lakes’ biodiversity.
Farmers in the surrounding areas have benefited from the restoration project, as they can now use the rejuvenated lakes for farming and other purposes. Fishermen can also harvest three times as much as before. Additionally, the soil removed during desilting was distributed to 52 farmers to use as topsoil for their fields.
RCB’s focus on environmental sustainability extended to Kannur Lake, where the aim was to improve community ownership and create civic amenities such as Ethno-Medicinal Plants Parks, Bamboo Parks, and Butterfly Parks. These amenities enhance biodiversity and serve as educational hubs for children to understand local ecosystems.
The Central Groundwater Board of India estimates that over 12% of groundwater blocks in India are over-exploited, while another 12% are in a semi-critical stage. RCB’s lake restoration initiative addresses these challenges by supporting groundwater recharge and promoting sustainable water management practices.
RCB’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to environmental and social responsibility. As Rajesh Menon, VP and Head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, noted, “Our fans have been actively engaged in our green initiatives since 2013, playing a pivotal role in spreading awareness about sustainability within our community.”
RCB’s restoration of the three Bengaluru lakes represents a positive step toward improving the city’s water resources and supporting local livelihoods.
