Rohit Sharma marked his return to the Indian cricket team with a bang. He smashed 52* runs in the opening encounter against Ireland. And in doing so, they broke several records as well.
Records broken by Rohit Sharma
During his inning, Sharma smashed 4 fours and 3 sixes, which helped him become the first cricketer to smash 600 sixes in T20Is. Furthermore, he also breached the 4000-run mark in T20Is and is the only third player to do so in the history of the format.
With his knock of 52* yesterday, Sharma became the second Indian after Virat Kohli to make 1000 runs in the T20 World Cup.
Last but not least, the victory against Ireland helped Rohit Sharma become the most successful T20I captain in the history of Indian Cricket. He surpassed MS Dhoni in registering 42 wins in the format from 55 games as captain, compared to the former’s 41 wins from 73 matches.
The match was a tricky affair to begin with and Ireland found that out the hard way. The newly constructed USA pitch played all kind of tricks on batters, making their life hard. They were dismantled by the Indian pace bowling attack for a mere total of 98. India managed to win the game in just 12.2 overs.
Regarding the wicket’s tricky nature, Rohit Sharma said, “Quite unsure of what to expect from the pitch. Not aware on what it is to play like on a pitch that’s five months old. I don’t think the wicket settled down even when we batted second. There was enough for the bowlers. That’s pretty much what you gotta do. Try to hit those lengths consistently.”
India will next take on Pakistan on the 9th of June. It will be an exhilarating encounter with two of the best teams in the tournament taking on each other.
