Rohit Sharma, the Indian opener, achieved a significant milestone during the opening day of the third Test against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot by surpassing MS Dhoni’s record for the most sixes in Test cricket by an Indian.
Rohit Surpasses Dhoni’s Record
With his second six of the innings, Rohit Sharma went past MS Dhoni’s tally of 78 maximums in Test cricket, solidifying his position as one of India’s most prolific six-hitters in the longest format of the game. Notably, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag holds the record for the most sixes in Tests by an Indian, with 91 hits.
Rohit Sharma’s feat adds to his stature as the most prolific six-hitter in international cricket, boasting a combined tally of 590 maximums across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. In T20Is, he leads the chart with 190 sixes in 143 innings, while he ranks third in ODIs, with 323 maximums in 254 innings.
While Rohit Sharma excels among Indian players, the overall record for most sixes in Tests is held by Ben Stokes, the current England captain, with an impressive 128 maximums in 179 innings. Stokes is followed by Brendon McCullum (107 sixes in 176 innings) and Adam Gilchrist (100 sixes in 137 innings).
Other Milestones Achieved by Rohit Sharma
Apart from breaking MS Dhoni’s Test sixes record, Rohit Sharma achieved several other milestones during the match. He completed 1000 test runs against the English side, taking 23 test innings with three centuries and four half-centuries to reach the milestone. Furthermore, Rohit surpassed MS Dhoni to become India’s second-highest six-hitter in test cricket, with 80 sixes.
In addition to his individual achievements, Rohit Sharma also climbed up the ladder in India’s international run-scorers list, surpassing the legendary cricketer Sourav Ganguly to become India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in international cricket, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rahul Dravid.
In the match, after opting to bat first, India faced early setbacks, losing three wickets in just 8.5 overs. However, a resilient partnership between Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja saw the hosts recover with a double hundred stand for the fourth wicket, showcasing the batting depth of the Indian team.
