Wriddhiman Saha, the experienced Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, is poised for a return to Bengal ahead of the upcoming domestic season. The veteran cricketer was recently seen in Kolkata catching up with former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly. This meeting has sparked speculation that Saha is considering participating in the Bengal Pro T20 League and making himself available for Bengal in other domestic tournaments.
The meeting between Ganguly and Saha quickly went viral, though Saha has remained tight-lipped about his plans. However, sources within the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) have confirmed that Saha has not yet formally sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the association, but there is a strong possibility he might return to Bengal.
An official from the TCA revealed, “All we know so far is that Ganguly has told him to play at least one game for Bengal before hanging up his boots. However, he has yet to formally convey his decision to us.”
Why did Saha leave CAB in the first place?
In 2022, Saha moved to Tripura after a fallout with certain Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) officials. Despite efforts from then CAB chief Avishek Dalmiya to retain him, Saha decided to leave, citing personal reasons and dissatisfaction with comments made by a senior CAB official. This official had questioned Saha’s commitment after he opted to skip the group stage of the Ranji Trophy. The situation escalated to the point where Saha exited the Bengal team’s WhatsApp group despite coach Arun Lal’s attempts to mediate.
During his stint with Tripura, Saha took on the role of player-mentor and contributed significantly to the team’s performance in domestic tournaments. His leadership and experience were invaluable to the team, leading to a respectable season for Tripura.
Recently, Sudip Chatterjee, who had also joined Tripura and Saha, returned to Bengal. This move further fueled speculation about Saha’s potential return. The prospect of having Saha back in the Bengal team is exciting for fans and officials alike, given his extensive experience and skill.
As the domestic season approaches, it’ll be interesting to see what Saha finally decides. His return to Bengal would not only bolster the team but also provide a fitting stage for Saha to conclude his illustrious domestic career.
