Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill offered a blunt assessment of his team’s performance after a four-run defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2024 season. The match saw high-scoring innings from both sides, with DC posting 224 for 4, thanks to a firm stand by Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel.
The Role of the Impact Player in High-Scoring Matches
Gill highlighted the role of the Impact Player in influencing the high-scoring nature of matches in IPL 2024. With the Impact Player rule providing additional support to batters, teams can afford to go hard at the bowlers and play more aggressively throughout the game.
“The Impact Player has a bit of a role in making the matches high-scoring. Even if you lose extra wickets, the extra cushion is there for the batters to keep going, and it gives the licence for the batters to keep going till the end,” Gill explained.
Despite a strong start, GT’s bowlers allowed DC to come back as Pant and Patel formed a 113-run partnership. Gill felt his side gave away a few extra runs towards the end of the innings, which ultimately proved costly.
“At one stage, we thought we would be able to restrict them to around 200-210. We gave away a few extra runs in the last couple of overs,” Gill stated.
However, Gill remained optimistic about GT’s fighting spirit during the match. “We played some outstanding cricket, disappointing to lose in the end, but great character was shown by everyone. Great fight till the end, and we never thought we were out of the game at any point,” he added.
DC’s Rishabh Pant showcased his destructive form with an 88 not out off 43 balls, earning the player of the match award. This was a significant comeback for Pant, who had missed over a year of cricketing action due to a serious car accident.
“Every day that I’m in the middle, I feel better. Every hour on the field matters; I love being on the field. I try to give it my 100%, and it takes some time sometimes,” Pant said, expressing his delight in being back on the field.
GT’s loss to DC marked the team’s third loss in five IPL 2024 games. While Shubman Gill and his team showed resilience during the match, they fell short of the target in the end. As the tournament progresses, GT will need to address its execution and strategy to bounce back in future matches.
