South Africa defeated Afghanistan in the semifinals to reach their first-ever T20 World Cup Final. They ran a rampage through Afghanistan’s batting order to reach this stage of the tournament.
It was a huge moment for both teams, as they were eying the first final in the tournament’s history. However, South Africa emerged victorious.
The Tarouba ground was a paradise for fast bowlers. It offered lateral movement along with bounce. Hence, the tall bowling duo of Jansen and Rabada made the most of it.
It was Jansen who got things underway in the first over, as he removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz. In the next over, he managed to clean up Gulbadin Naib to send ripples through the Afghanistan batting lineup.
Rabada, on the other hand, clinched two wickets in his first over as well. He removed Zadran and Nabi to break Afghanistan’s back. The over was also a double wicket maiden.
Later Nortje and Shamsi joined in. They ensured that the tail didn’t wag. As a result, Afghanistan was bundled for a score of 56 runs.
South Africa attained glory
Despite a rattled start, during which South Africa lost quick wickets in the form of Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock, they managed to calmly reach the target.
It was Reeza Hendricks who stood his ground to ensure that there were no more hiccups. This was a complete effort by the South African side. They played all their cards right, bowled well, fielded beautifully, and, despite some early challenges in the batting, managed to emerge victorious.
The rewards of their hard work came in the form of a confirmed berth in the 2024 T20 World Cup final. They are on an eight-match unbeaten run in the tournament now, and their eyes will be set on the prized World Cup trophy.
