The Sri Lankan cricket team might be far from being at its prime in cricket at the moment. But that didn’t stop them from putting on a boss performance against Bangladesh in the second test of the series at Chattogram.
The touring party posted a total of 531 in the first inning of the test. With this total, they broke the record for the highest test inning total by a team without any batter reaching the milestone of a century.
With this display, they broke the 50-year-old record, previously owned by India against New Zealand, at Kanpur.
Kamindu Mendis missed out on historic third-century
Although this was a record for the team, their player Kamindu Mendis missed out on a historical moment for himself. He was batting magnificently with 92 runs against his name. And it seemed that he would be able to reach a third consecutive hundred to join the elite list of players to do so.
His partner, Asitha Fernando, however, had other ideas. He ran out for a duck, eventually denying Mendis a well-deserved hundred in the game.
Apart from Mendis, several other batters made significant contributions to the inning. Nishan Madusha and Karunaratne got them underway with a 96-run partnership. Both batters scored 57 and 86, respectively. This was followed by Kushal Mendis’ near miss inning of 93 runs and Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva’s contributions of 59 and 70.
Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers for the home side. He claimed 3 wickets in the inning and gave away 110 runs in his 37 overs. Hasan Mahmud was the other bowler, who claimed 2 wickets and 92 runs from his 24 overs. It was a toil for Bangladesh bowlers, who were made to field for a total of 159 overs.
