Virat Kohli has been dubbed with various names over the years. However, the title of “King” has stuck with him over the years. Fans and sometimes even the ICC have dubbed him “King Kohli” on various occasions.
But it seems that Virat himself is not pleased with the title that has been bestowed upon him. This became very evident during the RCB Unbox event ahead of RCB’s opening game in the IPL 2024.
Kohli opens up about being called ‘King’
Kohli was treated to a rousing ovation by the fans during the event. He was entering the field after a long hiatus, and the fans went into a frenzy, chanting “King Kohli.”
During the event, Kohli revealed to everyone that he was not happy with the title. He requested Danis Sait and the fans not to address him as “King,” as it made him feel embarrassed.
He said, “Firstly, you need to stop calling me that word (King). Please call me Virat. Don’t call me that word, I was telling Faf du Plessis that I feel embarrassed every year when you call me that word. So just call me Virat, please, from now on, don’t use that word; it’s very embarrassing for me.”
RCB wanting to replicate women team’s success
The event also witnessed the RCB women’s team getting a guard of honour from the men’s players who had gathered for the unboxing event. Following this, Kohli expressed his desire to repeat the feat that the women’s team has achieved in the IPL as well.
“It was absolutely amazing. When they won it, we were watching. Hopefully, we can double it up with the trophies, and that will be something truly special,” Kohli added.
Kohli and RCB will start their IPL 2024 campaign on March 22. They will face the defending champions Chennai Super Kings on their home ground.
It will be a challenging encounter since CSK seldom loses a game at Chepauk. But if the RCB team can salvage 2 points from the game, it will give them a great boost heading into the rest of the tournament.
