In a stunning display of power-hitting, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters etched their names in the annals of Indian Premier League (IPL) history by breaking the record for the highest innings total ever. Facing off against Mumbai Indians, SRH posted an astonishing 277/3 in their allotted 20 overs, surpassing the previous record set by Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013.
Mumbai Indians found themselves outmanoeuvred as they grappled with SRH’s aggressive onslaught. Despite strategizing to utilize Jasprit Bumrah to counter Heinrich Klaasen’s batting prowess, their plans were thwarted by the relentless assault from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the initial overs of the match.
Travis Head sets new fastest fifty record; Abhishek Sharma breaks it minutes later
Travis Head announced his arrival in style, reaching his half-century in a mere 18 deliveries, setting a new record for the fastest fifty by a player in SRH’s history. However, his feat was eclipsed by Abhishek Sharma, who outpaced him, reaching his fifty in just 16 balls, further intensifying the onslaught on the MI bowlers.
Debutant South African pacer Kwena Maphaka endured a nightmarish outing, conceding 22 and 20 runs, respectively, in his second and third overs, with Head and Abhishek capitalizing on his inexperience. His figures of 0/66 in four overs reflected the merciless onslaught he faced.
Amidst the carnage, Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the lone beacon of control for Mumbai Indians, although he remained wicketless, conceding 36 runs. By the 13th over, SRH had amassed 180/3, with Bumrah being the only bowler to have avoided conceding a boundary in his two overs.
Head’s breathtaking innings of 62 runs off just 24 balls, embellished with nine fours and a six, left an indelible impact. Meanwhile, Abhishek’s aggressive batting centred around seven sixes and three fours, as he blazed to 63 runs off 23 deliveries.
Following their dismissals, Heinrich Klaasen assumed the mantle of power-hitting, finishing unbeaten on 80 off 34 deliveries, smashing four fours and seven sixes, culminating in SRH’s monumental total.
