In a spectacular display of dominance, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) clinched a resounding 89-run victory over Durban Super Giants in the final of the second season of the SA20 tournament at Cape Town’s Newlands. The SEC retained their SA20 title comprehensively, showcasing their prowess in both batting and bowling.
The foundation for SEC’s triumph was laid with a formidable batting performance. Jordan Hermann (42 off 26), Tom Abell (55 off 34), Aiden Markram (42* off 26), and Tristan Stubbs (56* off 30) orchestrated a batting spectacle, propelling their team to an impressive total of 204.
Opting to to bat first, SEC’s top-order executed the plan effectively, despite the early loss of Dawid Malan in the second over. A resilient 80-run partnership between Hermann and Abell laid a solid foundation. Abell’s explosive finish to the PowerPlay, including one six and two fours off Wiaan Mulder, propelled SEC to 55/1. The following four overs witnessed a remarkable acceleration, almost doubling the total and surpassing 100 in 10 overs.
Although Keshav Maharaj momentarily disrupted SEC’s momentum by dismissing both set batsmen in the 11th over, Stubbs and captain Markram took charge, amassing 98 runs for the fourth wicket.
Their explosive partnership, particularly in the last four overs, propelled SEC to 145/3 in 16 overs. The death overs witnessed a flurry of boundaries, with Markram and Stubbs unleashing an array of sixes, propelling SEC to a formidable total.

In the second inning, Marco Jansen fortified SEC’s position by claiming a five-wicket haul, eventually finishing the tournament as the top wicket-taker for the season with a tally of 20 wickets. Ottniel Baartman and Daniel Worrall contributed with two wickets each, solidifying SEC’s bowling prowess throughout the season.
Chasing a daunting target, Durban Super Giants encountered early setbacks as Worrall and Jansen dismantled their top order, reducing them to 7 for 3. Despite a brief resistance from Matthew Breetzke and Wiaan Mulder, SEC continued to assert their dominance. Jansen’s five-wicket haul played a pivotal role in securing SEC’s emphatic victory and reaffirming their status as SA20 champions.
