The Afghanistan cricket team registered a historic win over Australia in the ongoing T20 World Cup in the West Indies. They defeated the former champions by 21 runs to win against the team for the first time.

Following this victory, Australian batter Usman Khawaja extended his congratulations to the Afghan team. He admitted that the better team on the day had emerged victorious. He also mentioned how Cricket Australia’s disappointing decision to call off a series against Afghanistan was disappointing.

Afghanistan overcome Australia’s challenge

A low-scoring encounter between Australia and Afghanistan kept everyone hooked until the final delivery, which was bowling. Having batted first, Afghanistan posted a total of 148 in their 20 overs on what was a tricky wicket.

Australia, however, didn’t have the best start to the chase. Despite Maxwell’s fighting fifty in the middle overs, they couldn’t chase the total down. As a result, they suffered their first defeat at the hands of Afghanistan.

Cricket Australia cancelled the series with Afghanistan

It has been nearly three years since Cricket Australia turned down the proposal to host Afghanistan for a cricket series. The decision was taken following the ban imposed by the Taliban on women’s involvement in sports.

They first canceled a one-off test match against Afghanistan, following which they also turned down a three-match series set to take place in the UAE in 2023. Most recently, they declined to play against Afghanistan after a proposal for a T20I series was presented to them and scheduled for August.

The future of competition between these two teams remains uncertain. However, whenever they meet in an ICC tournament, there are many unforgettable moments up for grabs.
