Kolkata Knight Riders’ star spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has called on bowlers to adapt to the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) impact player rule rather than complaining about it. The rule, introduced last season, allows teams to substitute a player from the starting 11 at any point during the match.
Understanding the Impact Player Rule
The impact player rule has contributed to the high-scoring matches in IPL 2024. Teams have taken an aggressive approach from the start, knowing they have the option to bring in an additional batter if needed. This season, teams seem to better grasp how to use the rule effectively.
Chakaravarthy emphasised that while the rule was in place last season, teams have become more proficient in utilising it this year. “The impact player rule was there last year too but there weren’t as many high scores. The main thing is teams have understood better how to use an impact player this season. They all know there is extra batting (available if needed) and charge from the first ball. That’s how it’s going,” he told reporters.
Chakaravarthy acknowledged the challenges bowlers face under the impact player rule, but he emphasised the importance of adapting to the rule rather than resisting it. “How much ever the bowlers cry, that’s how it is. We have to take up the challenge. You can’t change the size of the ground, you can’t change anything,” he added.
Chakaravarthy’s understanding and adaptation to the impact player rule were on full display in Monday’s match against Delhi Capitals. He played a pivotal role, claiming three crucial wickets, including those of Rishabh Pant, Tristan Stubbs, and impact player Kumar Kushagra. His performance was instrumental in Kolkata’s victory, helping them restrict Delhi to 153-9 in their 20 overs.
Phil Salt’s explosive 68 off 33 balls at the top of the order ensured Kolkata chased down the target comfortably with 21 balls to spare, keeping them on course for a playoff berth.
KKR is currently second in the standings with six wins from nine matches. They will face the five-time champions Mumbai Indians in their next encounter on Friday. As KKR prepares for this important match, Chakaravarthy’s message of adaptability and resilience will resonate with bowlers across the league looking to overcome the challenges posed by the impact player rule.
