Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered another defeat in the playoff stage of the tournament. This time, they were defeated by Rajasthan Royals, who batted brilliantly to reach the Qualifier stage.

With this defeat, the age-old question once again comes to the fore: Why can’t Virat Kohli leave RCB?

The star batter has been with the franchise since the start of the tournament. He has been consistent with the bat in hand and their highest runs scorer over the years. But his relentless performances have not produced results, and the franchise has yet to win a trophy in its 17 years.

Voicing the same argument, England’s former player and captain Kevin Pietersen said, “I have said it before, and I will say it again – the greats of the game in other sports have left teams to go and seek glory somewhere else. When he has tried and tried so hard – won the orange cap yet again and done so much yet again, and the franchise fails again. I understand the brand of the team and the commercial value he brings to the team… But Virat Kohli deserves a trophy. He deserves to play in a team that could help him to get the trophy.”

Looking at the bigger picture, there is a compelling argument for Virat Kohli to consider a change. As Kevin Pietersen pointed out, some of the greatest athletes in other sports, including footballing legends like David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Harry Kane, have all changed teams in pursuit of career glory. Could a similar move be on the cards for Kohli, perhaps a return to his roots with the Delhi Capitals?

Yet, in the face of these challenges, there is no doubt about Virat Kohli’s unwavering commitment to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has given his all for the team, and it would be a seismic shift in the IPL landscape to see him not being retained ahead of the 2025 season.
