As the cricketing world is awaiting the announcement of Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian Cricket team, some new developments have taken place. According to reports online, VVS Laxman is all set to step in as the interim coach of the Indian team.
This development comes as Rahut Dravid’s tenure as the Indian national team’s coach is set to end. With uncertainties surrounding Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as coach, Laxman is all set to take over for the Zimbabwe tour.
“There is a possibility that Laxman, along with some of the NCA coaches, will travel with the new-look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team has always filled up whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have been taken periodic breaks during their stint,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Laxman has indeed fulfilled the role as the head coach of the Indian team on several occasions. He has won several bilateral series with the junior team or even with the senior team in Dravid’s absence. His remarkable performance came in the 2023 Asian Games, when the Indian team won a gold medal for this sublime performance.
Hence, the Zimbabwe tour will be a perfect opportunity for him to add another accolade to his name. The series is all set to commence from July 6 and will feature a total of five matches. This series will feature a completely new Indian team, with players who are not partaking in the ongoing T20 World Cup.
In the meantime, Gautam Gambhir is most likely to take on the role of new head coach. However, confirmation of his appointment has yet to arrive. The former Indian player recently appeared at the CAC’s interview for the role of head coach. Following this, his appointment, along with the paperwork, is believed to be completed within a week.
