In a thrilling ICC T20 World Cup match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Grand Prairie Stadium, Wanindu Hasaranga made history by surpassing the legendary Lasith Malinga to become Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker in T20 Internationals. Despite Hasaranga’s milestone achievement, Bangladesh emerged victorious, winning by two wickets in a nail-biting finish.

Hasaranga’s Record-Breaking Feat

Wanindu Hasaranga, the Sri Lankan skipper and leg-spinner, took two crucial wickets in his four-over spell, conceding 32 runs. With these wickets, Hasaranga’s T20I tally reached 108 wickets, surpassing Malinga’s previous record of 107 wickets. Other notable Sri Lankan bowlers in T20Is include Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis, both with 66 wickets and Dushmantha Chameera with 55.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, featuring significant shifts in momentum and keeping fans on the edge of their seats. Sri Lanka batted first and posted a modest total of 124/9. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer with 47 runs, while Dhananjaya de Silva contributed 21 runs. Despite early setbacks, Sri Lanka struggled to maintain a steady run rate, losing wickets at regular intervals. Mustafizur Rahman and Rishad Hossain were the standout bowlers for Bangladesh, each claiming three wickets.

Bangladesh’s Chase

In response, Bangladesh had a shaky start, losing Tanzid Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto early, leaving them at 28/3. However, Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy stabilized the innings with a crucial 63-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Litton scored 36 runs, while Towhid contributed 40. The match remained tense until the end, with Mahmudullah steering Bangladesh to victory with an unbeaten 16*, reaching the target with six balls to spare and two wickets in hand.

The defeat marked Sri Lanka’s second consecutive loss in the tournament. Despite a strong start in defending their total, Sri Lanka could not sustain the pressure, ultimately falling short in the tightly contested match.

Reflecting on the game, Wanindu Hasaranga emphasized the importance of focusing on their own skills rather than the opposition. “We need to beat the teams with our own skills rather than think about the opposition much. That’s the only thing I have been telling the guys,” Hasaranga stated. He highlighted the significance of effort over results, expressing satisfaction as long as the team gives their hundred per cent. Wanindu Hasaranga’s achievement of becoming Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is is a significant milestone.
