Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has expressed his confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to find form as the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches the Super 8 stage. The star batter has had an unusually poor run in the tournament so far, managing only five runs from three matches. Kohli’s scores of 1 (4), 4 (3), and a golden duck against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA, respectively, have surprised fans.
After a stellar run in IPL 2024, Virat’s current form attracts some criticism. Opening for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli accumulated 741 runs from 15 innings at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69. However, the 35-year-old has been unable to replicate this form in the ongoing tournament.
Despite Kohli’s struggles, Jaffer is optimistic about India’s overall performance, particularly after their comprehensive seven-wicket victory over the USA. Speaking on Star Sports, Jaffer highlighted the positive aspects of India’s game and showed faith in Kohli’s ability to bounce back. “They’re playing really well and have ticked a few important boxes in this game. Suryakumar Yadav getting runs, Shivam Dube’s performance and Arshdeep Singh’s impressive bowling with the new ball are all positive signs. Jasprit Bumrah has been the spearhead, but Arshdeep’s contributions have been crucial,” said Jaffer.
Jaffer also discussed the potential team selection for the upcoming West Indies leg, suggesting that Arshdeep might be preferred over Mohammed Siraj. “Probably, you’ll pick Arshdeep and Siraj might be the one missing out. A lot of good things are happening for the Indian team, and they’re finding their form. Even though Virat Kohli hasn’t got runs, I believe that come the Super 8s, the big man will stand up,” he added.
Despite Losing Virat and Rohit Early in the Innings Dube and SKY helped India Secure a Win
India’s recent victory over the USA saw them chase down 111 in 18.2 overs, thanks to a half-century from Suryakumar Yadav (50* off 49) and a gritty 31* (35) from Shivam Dube. Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh was named Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling figures of 4/9 in four overs, the best-ever by an Indian in T20 World Cup history. This win has secured India’s place in the Super 8, with one group match remaining against Canada on Saturday, June 15.
As India prepares for the crucial Super 8 phase, the team hopes for Kohli to regain his form. His experience and skill are invaluable, and a return to his best could be pivotal for India’s success in the tournament. The Men in Blue, buoyed by their recent performances, are optimistic about their prospects and are looking forward to continuing their winning streak.
