Since the news of Rahul Dravid’s departure from the position as India’s head coach was announced, Gautam Gambhir has been the only forerunner for the role.
Several internet reports have claimed that Gambhir has been finalized for the position. Still, India’s Board of Cricket Control has not announced his appointment.
This has led to several outlets on the internet questioning the reason behind the delay. Hence, today, we have decided to unearth the reason behind it.
According to a report by Times Now, the reason behind this delay is the salary negotiation between the two parties involved. The decision had become eminent even before the board interviewed two candidates for the role, Gambhir and WV Raman.
Earlier, the former Indian cricketer was also seen shooting a farewell video with the KKR team. This has sent a clear signal that he will be leaving the role for good and also prematurely joining the Indian cricket team.
However, the only reason the official announcement of his recruitment is not yet available is that the player’s salary cap has not been decided yet. According to BCCI, the previous coach, Rahul Dravid, was paid 12 crores per year. However, that was because he was a seasoned coach with a plethora of experience.
Dravid had been part of the U19 setup for years and had won several trophies with them. Occasionally, he also took up the national team job whenever the seniors were unavailable.
Gambhir, on the other hand, has no such experience. He has never coached any national side. The only coaching role he has participated in is his mentorship role with Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants in IPL.
While the BCCI has stated that the salary is negotiable and based on experience, it’s crucial to consider the impact of Gambhir’s experience, or lack thereof, on the team. This decision carries significant weight and will shape the future of Indian cricket.
However, the announcement is expected to come by July 26, as Jay Shah has declared that the new coach will take the position just in time for the crucial Sri Lanka series later this month, underlining the importance of the new coach’s appointment.
