The biggest clash of the 2024 T20 World Cup is right around the corner. The two giants of the cricketing world, the neighbours and fiercest rivals, India and Pakistan, will take on each other in the group stage match on June 9th.
The anticipation for this fixture is palpable whenever an ICC tournament is on the horizon. The history these two teams share, both in the sporting arena and beyond, adds a layer of intensity to this already fiery encounter.
Further enhancing the experience is the fact that Pakistan had never beaten India in a World Cup match, whether ODI or T20, until 2021.
Rizwan talks about Ramiz Raja’s demand ahead of India clash
In a recent interview during the opening event of the T20 World Cup, Rizwan opened up about his team’s first win against India in 2021. He recalled the circumstances leading to the game and said, “We had never beaten India before that. Ramiz Raja met us and said, you have to beat India. There was a long time to go for the World Cup when he first came in (as PCB president), but he had started developing this thought in the team right then.”
He further added that Raja had told them clearly that the tournament’s outcome didn’t matter to him as long as they beat India. “He used to say, don’t come under pressure,” he concluded.
The 2021 T20 World Cup was the first outing for Rizwan in an ICC tournament. And he is certainly delighted to become a part of the historic win for his side. In fact, he made a match-winning contribution of 79 runs from just 55 balls to help his team’s cause.
Earlier in the game, Shaheen Shah Afridi had dismissed the Indian top order. He dismissed KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma up front, and Virat Kohli later in the inning to help his team restrict the inaugural champions to a score of 151 for 7.
Pakistan went on to win the game with ten wickets to spare.
